Questions about therapy for kids

Expect a collaborative journey focused on your child’s emotional growth and healing. Our therapists will work with you and your child to set goals and develop an individualized treatment plan. Therapy sessions will be interactive, empowering your child to explore their thoughts and feelings. The frequency and duration of sessions will depend on your child’s unique needs, and progress will be regularly reviewed and discussed with you.

At our practice, all of our clinicians who provide therapy to children hold a minimum of a master’s degree in mental health counseling, social work, or a related field. They bring a wealth of experience, with two or more years of dedicated work providing therapy to children in both outpatient and school settings. All of our therapists have undergone thorough background checks and have successfully completed mandated reporter training. This means that if they come across any reportable concerns while working with your child, you will be informed promptly and directly, ensuring transparency and your child’s safety.

We prioritize creating a warm and inviting environment for your child. Our therapists are trained in child-centered approaches that use play, creative activities, and age-appropriate techniques to connect with and engage your child. Through interactive sessions tailored to your child’s needs, we aim to build trust and help them express themselves comfortably.

We understand that building rapport is essential. Our priority is ensuring your child’s comfort and progress. If your child expresses concerns, we encourage open communication. We can explore options, such as trying a different therapist or adjusting the approach. Our skilled therapists have experience in creating a safe and nurturing space, and we are dedicated to finding the right fit for your child’s needs.

In cases where a child is hesitant to open up, our therapists are trained to employ techniques that gradually foster trust. Patience is key, and our therapists work at your child’s pace. By utilizing play, creative activities, and age-appropriate methods, our goal is to make your child feel safe and confident in sharing their thoughts and feelings over time. We are committed to providing a supportive environment where your child’s well-being is paramount.

During the initial intake session with your chosen therapist, both you and your child will have the opportunity to meet with the therapist together. We understand that each child is unique, and our approach is tailored to their comfort level. Depending on your child’s age and comfort, the therapist may also request a brief one-on-one session with your child during this intake session.

As we move forward with sessions, the focus will primarily be on one-on-one interactions between your child and their therapist. However, we believe in fostering a collaborative environment. Towards the end of each session, you will be invited to join briefly for updates as needed or requested. This ensures that you are actively involved in your child’s progress and provides an opportunity to discuss any insights, goals, or questions that may arise.

Rest assured, we’re here to provide a supportive and nurturing space for both you and your child. Our approach aims to help your child thrive while ensuring that you feel informed and included every step of the way.

In Pennsylvania, if parents are separated, state law mandates that both biological parents or legal guardians must consent to mental health treatment for minors under the age of 14. Consequently, if you are separated from your child’s other biological parent, we require written consent for treatment from both you AND them before your child’s intake session.

Additionally, we will need a copy of the custody agreement from official court documents to include in your child’s chart during the initial intake process.

If you have questions or concerns about this, please reach out to us! We are here to support you.

Transparent communication is a cornerstone of our approach. We understand the balance between your child’s confidentiality and your need to be informed. Our therapists are dedicated to providing you with a high-level overview of your child’s progress, insights gained, and any challenges faced during therapy sessions. This ensures that you are well-informed about your child’s therapeutic journey.

However, it’s important to note that the specific details of your child’s sessions remain confidential to create a safe space for their expression. While we believe in involving parents, we also respect your child’s privacy and their right to share at their own pace.

Should you ever feel uncertain about the level of information you’re receiving or if you wish to have more insight, please don’t hesitate to express your thoughts to your child’s therapist. We value open dialogue and are here to address any concerns you may have. Our aim is to collaborate with you to make the therapeutic process as effective and stress-free as possible for both you and your child.

Supporting your child’s progress at home is vital. Our therapists are more than happy to provide you with tailored strategies that align with your child’s treatment goals. By working closely with your child’s therapist, you can gain practical insights and techniques that empower you to create a nurturing and supportive environment at home. Your involvement can greatly enhance the impact of the therapeutic experience for your child.

what you can expect from child therapy

The time needed to see positive changes in your child’s therapy depends on factors like age, the challenges they face, their response to therapy, and family involvement. Some children improve quickly, while others need more time. Short-term goals might be reached in weeks, but complex issues can take longer.

We help your child rediscover the joy of being themselves!

We can’t guarantee any specific results or timeline to achieve them, but over time you may be able to anticipate a range of positive outcomes that reflect both emotional and physical progress.
